Carbon Monoxide Detection FAQs
How do I know if I have a CO problem?
You often won’t — CO is invisible and odorless. Symptoms of CO exposure include headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. If your CO detector alarms, leave the house immediately and call 911.
How many CO detectors do I need?
At minimum, one on each level of your home and one outside every sleeping area. Homes with gas appliances or an attached garage should have additional detectors near those sources.
How long do CO detectors last?
Most CO detectors have a lifespan of 5–7 years. After that, the sensor degrades and the unit should be replaced, even if it still powers on.
Can my furnace really produce carbon monoxide?
Yes. A cracked heat exchanger, blocked flue, or incomplete combustion can allow CO to enter your home’s airflow. This is one of the most serious HVAC safety issues — and one of the most common reasons for CO alerts in Denver homes.
