How many smoke detectors do I need?
Colorado code requires a detector outside every sleeping area, inside each bedroom, and on every level of the home including the basement. Most homes need 5–8 detectors for complete coverage.
What’s the difference between hardwired and battery-only smoke detectors?
Hardwired detectors connect to your home’s electrical system with battery backup — they won’t go dead if you forget to change batteries, and they can be interconnected so all alarms sound together. Battery-only detectors are easier to install but less reliable and not code-compliant for new installations in most jurisdictions.
How long do smoke detectors last?
Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years, even if they still appear to work. The sensors degrade over time and may not respond reliably to smoke.
